Andrea Leadsom, the former Speaker of the Privy Council, believes that her advocacy of a rational break-away from Europe can not only break the deadlock in Britain, but also pave the way for her entry into Downing Street.
Lidessom is one of the 10 candidates for the British prime minister. She positioned herself as an optimistic but realistic secessionist. She regards Britain's departure from Europe on October 31 as a "hard red line" and promotes the so-called "managed departure" through legislation to protect EU citizens, British territory Gibraltar and commodity trade.
This puts her at odds with other conservative candidates for secession. Johnson, a popular candidate for the post and former British Foreign Secretary, has urged Britain to leave Europe by the end of October, regardless of whether a deal can be reached.
For critics, Lidsom's claims seem fantastic. The European Union has questioned the idea of agreeing on a piecemeal agreement rather than a holistic one, and the British Parliament has expressed little interest in adopting what many see as a much better one than a no-agreement one.
