Teresa May stepped down as head of Britain's ruling Conservative Party last Friday after three submissions to the British Parliament of her deliberations with the European Union failed to gain support. She had hoped that the agreement would lead to Britain's successful withdrawal from Europe and resolve the country's worst political crisis in about 30 years.
Her successor nomination must be submitted on Monday, and the Conservative General Assembly Committee (1922 Committee), which runs the campaign, says that 10 candidates have met the requirements and won the support of at least eight Conservative MPs.
Sam Gyimah, the 11th candidate, withdrew shortly after announcing that he had not received enough parliamentary support. He is the only candidate to support a second referendum on the EU exit.
Conservative MPs will vote in the first round on Thursday to narrow the candidates.
The candidates'campaign platforms announced on Monday put forward plans to solve domestic problems, but the issue of de-Europeanization remained dominant and pointed unequivocally at former Foreign Minister Johnson.
"If I can enter the final race and I believe I will, I will say to Johnson,'Mr. Johnson, whatever you do, please don't quit'," said Michael Gove, Minister of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. In the last conservative leadership contest in 2016, Goff decided at the last minute to run for office and withdraw his support for Johnson, which led to the defeat of the latter.
