According to data released by Purdue University and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange Group on May 4, farmers'confidence in the United States plunged to its lowest level in nearly three years in May due to increased concerns about the escalation of Sino-US economic and trade frictions and economic prospects.
Purdue University-Chicago Mercantile Exchange Agricultural Economic Barometer is a monthly index of agricultural producer confidence based on a survey of 400 agricultural producers in the United States. In May, the index fell 14 points to 101 points, the lowest since October 2016.
The sharp decline of the index is mainly due to the decline of both the current index and the expected index reflecting farmers'views on the current and future economic situation. In addition, the large-scale farm investment index, which reflects farmers'willingness to invest on a large scale, fell 11 to 37 points annually, the lowest since the comparable data in autumn 2015.
James Minter, director of Purdue University's Center for Commerce and Agriculture, said there were many uncertainties in the Sino-US economic and trade negotiations, which made American farmers face difficult choices. In addition, most parts of the Midwest and Eastern Plains of the United States suffered heavy rains and floods, and extreme weather may lead to a decline in crops such as corn and soybeans.
China is one of the most important exporters of agricultural products in the United States. Affected by Sino-US economic and trade frictions, U.S. agricultural exports to China have fallen sharply. Industry organizations such as the American Soybean Association have warned many times that the escalation of economic and trade frictions in the United States will make farmers fall victim.
