The U.S. government has imposed sanctions on Huawei in an attempt to prevent it from buying American products. The Trump administration had told its allies not to use Huawei's 5G technology and equipment because it feared that Huawei equipment would be used by the Chinese government for espionage and sensitive communications and data.
The British National Security Council, chaired by Prime Minister Teresa May, met last month to discuss Huawei. It decided to ban Huawei from accessing all the core parts of the 5G network, but to allow limited access to non-core parts.
Sources said that senior British cabinet ministers should have made a final decision in recent weeks, but Teresa May's commitment to resign hindered the process. She is expected to step down at the end of July.
Asked if the United States wanted the next British leader to take a tougher stand on Huawei, Bolton said discussions with London were continuing, but Trump might raise the issue when he visits Britain next week.
"I am not sure whether this decision will be submitted to the Prime Minister's level in the final form. I mean, we're still discussing it, "Bolton told reporters in London." Officials are discussing it over and over again.
"Everyone is gradually recognizing the dangers of Tsinghua and other companies'equipment, especially for the fifth generation telecommunications system. These devices may allow foreign governments to enter the back door of the telecommunications system, "he said.
5G is regarded as one of the biggest innovations since the birth of the last generation of Internet. It will provide faster data transmission speed and become the cornerstone of many industries and networks.
Some equate 5G with the Cold War arms race, and the United States fears that the dominance of the 5G market will give rivals like China an advantage that Washington is not ready to accept.
