The results of the European Parliament election on Sunday evening punished Britain's two major political parties. It was obvious that Britain's withdrawal from Europe caused serious disagreement. Leader contenders of the ruling Conservative Party in Britain said that the election results showed that Britain's withdrawal would be achieved in any case.
The opposition Labour Party has adopted a different strategy, saying that holding a public vote - a new national election or a second referendum - is the way to reunite Britain. Nearly three years have passed since Britain decided to leave Europe by a weak referendum, and just two months after the original planned date, British parliamentarians are still divided on how, when and even whether Britain will withdraw from the EU that Britain joined in 1973.
On the Conservative side, a new leader will be appointed to replace the current Prime Minister, Teresa May, by the end of July. Many popular successors believe that the vote in the European Parliament shows that they must find a clearer way out of the European Union. Several successors say they support Britain's withdrawal from Europe without agreement. Some senior conservative members of the pro-European Union view this as reckless.
