Pompeo questioned the British government's attitude towards Beijing and tried to stimulate London, saying that if it were Mrs. Thatcher, the Iron Lady, she would take a tougher stand against China.
Pompeo sent a strong message to Britain. China Huawei [HWT.UL] was allowed to participate in the construction of the non-core part of the 5G network in the UK last month.
"Now neither of us should waver," Pompeo said in a speech on the special relationship between the two countries, reiterating Mrs. Thatcher's famous saying to the late former President George H. W. Bush.
"On the issue of China, we are facing new challenges; a dictatorship that is economically integrated into the West, which the Soviet Union has never had," Pompeo said.
The United States has told allies not to use Huawei's technology to build a new 5G network because it fears it could become a tool for Chinese espionage. Huawei has denied such allegations. Britain said it would allow Huawei to play a limited role.
"Ask yourself: Will the Iron Lady remain silent when China violates state sovereignty through corruption or coercion?" Pompeo said. Will she allow China to control the Internet in the future?
"Insufficient security will prevent the United States from sharing certain information on reliable networks. That's exactly what China wants to differentiate the Western alliance through the Internet, not bullets and bombs.
