British Minister of Culture, Media and Sports Wright said Thursday that he could not rule out the possibility of a criminal investigation into the "unacceptable" leak of confidential discussions about China Huawei's role in the UK 5G network supply chain.
Huawei, the world's largest telecom equipment manufacturer, is currently under close scrutiny in several countries. Previously, the United States warned its allies not to use Huawei technology because it feared it might be used as a tool for Chinese espionage. Huawei categorically denies this.
Sources told Reuters Wednesday that the National Security Council (NSC) has decided to ban Huawei from accessing all the core parts of the country's 5G network and restrict its access to non-core parts.
The leak of information from the NSC meeting sparked outrage in Parliament because the committee's discussions should have been confidential. Reports on the meeting were originally published in national newspapers.
"We can't rule out the possibility of criminal investigation here," Wright said in response to urgent questions about Huawei in Parliament.
"I don't think the motivation for this leak matters. This is unacceptable. It undermines the ability of the government to function well.
A spokeswoman for British Prime Minister Teresa May declined to comment on the leak or on the investigation, but said, "The Prime Minister knows very well that protecting information about national security matters is the most important thing." Teresa May is the chairman of the NSC.
