DPRK Central News Agency confirmed that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will visit Russia and hold a summit with Russian President Putin.
Through Kim Jong-un's visit to Russia, we can see that since the breakdown of the US-DPRK Hanoi summit in February, Kim Jong-un is striving to enhance foreign support for DPRK's economic development plan.
KCNA said the visit would take place "very soon", but did not specify the time and place of the visit.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Monday that Putin and Kim Jong-un may meet before the end of April.
Kim Chang Son, Kim Jong-un's chief assistant, appeared in Vladivostok on Sunday, according to Yonhap News Agency, triggering speculation that Putin and Kim Jong-un might hold a summit there from April 24 to 25.
NK News, which studies North Korea, posted photos on its website Monday showing Vladivostok, the Russian Federal University of the Far East, which may be responsible for part of the reception of the summit, preparing workers to fly the flags of North Korea and Russia.
Artyom Lukin, a professor at Far Eastern Federal University, said Kim Jong-un appeared to be trying to prove that he was still popular among global leaders and had more options after the failure of diplomatic efforts at the Hanoi Summit.
"Kim Jong-un doesn't want to be seen as too dependent on Washington, Beijing or Seoul," he said. "As for Russia, this Putin meeting will re-prove the important role of Moscow authorities in the Korean Peninsula issue. This conference is very important to Russia's international prestige.
