In the evening, flames burst from the top of Notre Dame and spread rapidly over the steeple, which then collapsed along with the entire roof.

The fire lasted until evening, and firefighters fought hard to prevent the collapse of a major bell tower. One firefighter was seriously injured, the only casualty report so far.
"At present, we think that the two towers of Notre Dame have survived," Jean-Claude Gallet, Chief Fire Officer of Paris, told reporters on the spot. "We now believe that the main structure of Notre Dame has been saved and preserved."
He points out that some internal structures are still at risk of collapse, and firefighters will work all night to cool them down.
The grieving Parisian people and the gaping tourists watched incredibly as Notre Dame plunged into flames. Notre Dame de Paris is situated on the island of Sidai in the Seine River. It is a landmark building in the centre of Paris.
Thousands of onlookers stood outside the cordon on the banks and bridges of the Seine River to watch firefighters put out the fire.
