U.S. President Trump said Tuesday that he would list Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, an unprecedented move condemned by Iran and raised fears of retaliatory attacks on U.S. forces.
Trump's move marks the first time that the United States has listed a country's armed forces as a terrorist organization. Trump has been taking a hard line towards Iran, including withdrawing from the Iranian nuclear agreement signed in 2015 and restarting comprehensive economic sanctions against the country.
The decision will come into force on April 15. Iran immediately responded, and Iranian state television reported that the Supreme National Security Council also listed the U.S. Armed Forces as a "terrorist organization".
"The U.S. military bases and armed forces in the region will be regarded as bases and forces of terrorist organizations and will be treated accordingly," Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi told Iranian state television, calling the U.S. decision a "major strategic mistake".
"IRGC is the main tool for the Iranian government to carry out its global terrorist operations," Trump said in a statement. The U.S. government has been criticizing Iran for exerting influence in Iraq, Syria and Yemen.
