If the DUP turns to Teresa May, it may persuade many Eurosceptics within the Conservative Party to support her withdrawal agreement, which is unlikely to be approved in the third ballot.
The decision of the DUP puts pressure on Parliament to make plans to avoid a "no agreement" withdrawal from Europe on April 12, the new deadline set by the European Union last week.
"If the government proposes a new round of voting, we will not support it," DUP said in a statement. Nigel Dodds, deputy leader of DUP, made it clear on Twitter that this meant they would vote against it.
Teresa May's departure will not change the terms of the withdrawal agreement, but will give former conservative sceptics who opposed the agreement a greater voice in future negotiations between Britain and the EU.
"I have a clear idea of what the parliamentary party is thinking," Teresa May said in a meeting with Conservative MPs.
"I know you all hope that in the second stage of the British withdrawal consultation there will be new countermeasures and new leadership, and I will not try to stop it."
Teresa May's gesture is the latest major turning point in Britain's three-year withdrawal crisis, but how, when and even whether Britain will withdraw from Europe is still full of variables.
