The Daily Telegraph reported Thursday that Geoffrey Cox, Britain's attorney general, had put forward a new legal basis claiming that Britain would be able to withdraw from Ireland's Safeguards under the Vienna Convention.
According to the Telegraph, Cox is trying to win support from the Conservative Eurosceptic MPs and the Democratic Alliance Party (DUP) for its new legal basis.
According to the report, Cox claimed that Britain would be able to terminate the safeguard clause if it "had an impact on social stability in Northern Ireland".
Cox said Tuesday that although Prime Minister Teresa May's withdrawal agreement has improved, there is still a legal risk that Britain may not be able to escape the safeguards clause. Teresa May's agreement was later rejected by the British Parliament on that day.
