Britain's Chancellor of the Exchequer, Hammond, said that if the British government asked for an extension of the withdrawal process, the European Union might insist on a substantial extension.
British parliamentarians voted Wednesday to reject a non-agreed exit from Europe, paving the way for a vote that would delay the withdrawal to at least the end of June.
"It's beyond our control. The EU hints that only if we come up with an agreement can the EU be willing to give a short technical delay to enact legislation," Hammond told Sky News on Thursday.
"If we don't have an agreement, or if we are still discussing the right way forward, then the EU is likely to insist on a substantial delay," he said.
