Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping were expected to hold a summit in Haihu Manor, Florida, at the end of this month, but the date has not yet been set. Negotiating teams have not held face-to-face talks for more than two weeks.
Trump told reporters at the White House that he believed the chances of reaching an agreement with China were high, partly because of the losses China had suffered from US tariff measures on Chinese products, and that China wanted to reach an agreement.
But Trump admits that after seeing no peace agreement reached at his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Vietnam, Xi may worry that the summit will not work.
"I want Chairman Xi to realize that I'm the kind of person who believes in leaving without a deal. You know it's always possible, and he probably doesn't want it to happen." Trump said.
Trump likes to emphasize his ability to reach an agreement, saying that the agreement aimed at ending the trade war over the past few months can be completed before the meeting between the two heads of state or in person when he meets with Chinese leaders.
"We can take either way: we can complete the agreement and sign it, or we can negotiate the final points when the agreement is nearing completion. I hope so." He said.
