Iraqi officials say Iraq and Iran signed several preliminary trade agreements on Monday. It was the first visit to Iraq by Iranian President Ruhani to seek to consolidate Iranian influence and expand trade ties to help offset the impact of the re-imposition of sanctions by the United States.
These agreements were reached soon after Rouhani began his visit to highlight Iran's dominance in Iraq despite attempts by the United States to isolate Iran. The agreement includes plans to build a railway connecting the two countries.
In a statement issued by Iraqi Prime Minister Mahdi's office, Ruhani and Mahdi signed several memorandums of understanding (MOUs). It covers oil, trade, medicine and health, as well as the construction of a railway linking the southern Iraqi oil city of Basra with the Iranian border town of Shalamcheh.
