The U.S. Embassy in Berlin said Monday that the use of untrusted suppliers by allies in 5G mobile networks could jeopardize future U.S. government intelligence sharing.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the Trump government has written to Berlin warning that if China Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. gains a place in Germany's next generation of mobile infrastructure, the United States will reduce data sharing with German security agencies.
A spokesman for the embassy declined to comment on the letter.
But he said the use of untrusted suppliers in allied networks could raise the issue of sharing the integrity and confidentiality of sensitive communications with a country and its allies. "This may jeopardize the flexibility of cooperation and some information sharing in the future," he said.
