Accenture (ACN.N), a technology consultancy, has published research showing that although 5G technology is expected to significantly increase network speed and capacity, global business and technology executives are not fully aware of the disruptive changes it may bring, they generally agree that 5G technology is of strategic importance.
According to the survey, executives mentioned possible obstacles to 5G landing, including up-front investment (36%), safety (32%) and employee acceptance (29%). Although 78% of executives believe that using 5G in the workplace is conducive to improving business security, one third of the respondents expressed concern about the security of 5G network.
"5G will set off a new wave of linkages, opening up a new path for innovation, business and economic development." George Nazi, head of Accenture's global network business, said.
He also said that the development of 3D video, immersive TV, self driving car and smart city infrastructure will bring unimaginable opportunities to enterprises and lead to major changes. To achieve these breakthroughs, the promotion role of telecom operators is crucial.
Seventy-two percent of executives surveyed said they needed help to imagine the future possibilities and application scenarios of 5G, and forty percent said telecom operators were their main service providers and partners on the 5G journey. However, 60% of the executives interviewed said that communication service providers did not have sufficient knowledge of the challenges facing their respective industries, such as how different industries should use technology to achieve innovation.
Loudhouse Research, on behalf of Accenture, conducted an online survey of more than 1,800 executives in 12 industries from December last year to January this year. 53% of executives believed that most of the tasks of 5G enabled enterprises could be supported by 4G networks. Less than 40% of executives predicted that 5G would bring revolutionary changes in network speed and network capacity.
