The economic slowdown is unlikely to curb China's defense budget growth in 2019, as Beijing spends more on large items such as modernisation and stealth jets and pays attention to Taiwan after President Xi's harsh speech in the new year.
As China develops new military capabilities, including aircraft carriers and anti-satellite missiles, the world is paying close attention to defense expenditure data in order to find clues to China's strategic intentions.
In 2018, China announced its biggest increase in defense spending in three years, an annual increase of 8.1%, which has promoted ambitious military upgrading plans and made neighboring countries nervous.
The figures for 2019 should be released at the opening of most of China's rubber stamp parliamentary annual meetings on March 5, although they were not initially announced in 2017, raising concerns about transparency.
Policy sources told Reuters that China plans to achieve a low economic growth target of 6-6.5% in 2019, compared with about 6.5% last year. The government will also announce its economic growth target on March 5.
