U.S. President Trump's government lifted sanctions on aluminium giant Rusal (0486.HK) and other Russian companies associated with the billionaire Oleg Deripaska on Sunday, although Democrats are still pushing for sanctions to be maintained in the U.S. Congress.
Earlier this month, 11 Republican senators and United Democrats tried unsuccessfully to maintain sanctions against Alcoa, its parent company En + and power company JSC EuroSib Energo. But that is not enough to overwhelm opposition from Trump and most other Republicans.
Advocates of maintaining sanctions say Oberja still has too much control over several companies to lift sanctions. Oberga is an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin. In April last year, the United States imposed sanctions on these enterprises to punish Russia for annexing Crimea, attempting to interfere in American elections and supporting the Syrian government in the Syrian civil war.
