U.S. President Trump said on Saturday that negotiations on a trade agreement between the United States and China are progressing, but denied that he was considering lifting tariffs on Chinese products.
"China's trade is progressing very smoothly," he told reporters at the White House, adding that he saw some "false reports" that the U.S. tariffs on Chinese products would be lifted.
"If we reach an agreement, of course we will not sanction, but if we do not reach an agreement, we will," Trump said. "We have indeed held quite a lot of consultations and will probably reach an agreement with China. Things are going smoothly, almost as smoothly as ever."
Chinese Vice Premier Liu He will visit the United States from January 30 to 31 to hold a new round of trade negotiations with the United States.
Last week, China and the United States held Deputy ministerial economic and trade talks in Beijing in an effort to resolve differences between the world's two major economies by March 2. If the two sides fail to reach an agreement before that date, the Trump Administration plans to raise tariff rates on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports to the United States.
According to an exclusive Reuters report on Friday, sources familiar with the Sino-US trade negotiations disclosed that the United States had requested a regular assessment of the progress of China's promised trade reforms as a condition of the trade agreement, and that if China was found to have violated the agreement, it might resort to tariff action again.
