Faced with international opposition to sentencing a Canadian drug smuggler to death, China said Wednesday that it was "not worried at all".
Robert Schellenberg, a Canadian man, was sentenced to death by a Chinese Court on Monday for smuggling 222 kilograms of methamphetamine. Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau condemned China's "arbitrary" death sentence.
The United States has expressed its opposition to the use of the death penalty except in exceptional circumstances; Simon Birmingham, Australia's acting foreign minister, said he was "deeply concerned" about the case.
Trudeau has recently called several world leaders to express concern about the Shellenberg case and the arrest of two Canadians. Two Canadians were detained in China last month after Canada arrested a senior executive of a Chinese company in Vancouver at the request of the United States.
At a regular press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hua Chunying said that on the above issues, Canadian allies "can be counted with ten fingers", and they simply do not represent the international community.
"I can tell you very clearly that we are not worried at all," Hua Chunying said of the opposition voice of the international community, saying that most Chinese support severe punishment of drug crimes.
Asked about Hua Chunying's comments, Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland pointed out that the 28-nation European Union (EU) expressed support for the Canadian government.
