As the government closed Tuesday and entered its 25th day, neither Trump nor the leader of the Congressional Democratic Party showed signs of giving in to the funding of the US-Mexico border wall. It was this problem that triggered the closure of the government.
Trump invited some bipartisan lawmakers to lunch to discuss the impasse, but the White House said the Democratic Party refused the invitation. Nine Republican members of the House of Representatives -- none of whom are party leaders -- attended the private lunch.
Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives said they had not told party members to boycott Trump's lunch, but asked those invited to think about whether the talks would be fruitful or just the events Trump arranged for photography.
"We are united," House Democratic leader Steny Hoyer told reporters early Tuesday.
Meanwhile, a team of senators from both parties is working on solutions. Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski told reporters in the corridor of the Capitol building that the team had "momentum" but did not provide more details.
"Anything can be part of the negotiations," said Joe Manchin, a Democratic senator and member of the team.
