According to testimony from executives of AAPL. O, Apple has talked with Samsung Electronics (005930. KS) and United Development Section (2454. TW) about supplying 5G modem chips to the iPhone in 2019 with existing supplier Intel (INTC. O). Apple executives testified in a court case between Qualcomm (QCOM.O) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on Friday.
Between 2011 and 2016, Apple relied on Qualcomm to supply such chips exclusively. The chip is designed to help the iPhone connect to wireless networks. Starting in 2016, Apple has allocated the business to Intel and Qualcomm, but in 2018, Apple let Intel supply the chips exclusively for its latest iPhone.
Tony Blevins, an Apple executive in charge of supply chain affairs, testified on Friday that Apple had also considered supplying its next generation wireless network 5G modem chips to MediaCorp and Samsung Electronics. Samsung is Apple's biggest rival in the smartphone market. It is expected that 5G network will be launched this year, and the data transmission speed will be faster than the existing 4G network.
