A U.S. missile destroyer sails near China's disputed Paracel Islands (Xisha Islands) in the South China Sea, where Chinese and American officials are negotiating on trade issues in Beijing.
Rachel McMarr, spokesman for the US Pacific Fleet, said in an e-mail statement that the USS McCampbell destroyer "carried out a free voyage" operation, sailing within 12 nautical miles of the Paracel chain, "challenging excessive maritime claims".
McMarr said the action was not aimed at any country, nor was it a political gesture.
