Consumer protection and technical experts suggest that consumers do not buy ZTE's Android (Android) phone for the time being until the company clarifies whether U. S. sanctions are making it impossible for its equipment to upgrade its operating system.
The US Commerce Department banned domestic companies from selling spare parts, software and other technologies to ZTE on Monday to punish the company for violating the terms of the settlement agreement with the US government.
After the release of the ban, 0763.HK (000063.SZ) suspended its shares in China's stock market and postponed its announcement. But the company did not tell consumers how the US ban would affect its ability to upgrade Android's operating system. The Android operating system is provided by Google.
On Wednesday, two mobile operators told Reuters that ZTE had no idea whether they could continue to provide mobile phone operating system upgrades.
ZTE did not respond to a request for comment. Google did not comment when asked whether the ban meant it could no longer provide Android updates.
Jamie Court, President of Consumer Watchdog, a US consumer protection organization in Losangeles, asked ZTE, Google and operators to tell consumers what the ban would have on their ability to provide service to ZTE.
"If they are not sure that they can update the system, they definitely should not sell any new phones," Court said.
ZTE's mobile phone is available on Thursday on major American operators and retailers, including AT&T (T.N), Sprint (S.N), Verizon Communications (VZ.N), best buy (Best Buy) (BBY.N) and WAL-MART (WMT.N).
Werrison and Sprint did not comment. AT&T, best buy and WAL-MART did not respond to requests for comment.
Some technical analysts advise consumers not to buy the company's mobile phones until ZTE's mobile phone can be upgraded.
"There is a lot of uncertainty. Buying ZTE mobile phones is not wise now," said John Jackson, a consumer technology analyst at IDC, a market research firm.
Roger Entner, an analyst at Recon Analytics, a consulting firm, expects us operators and retailers to clear up the stock of ZTE mobile phones and stop selling the company's mobile phone.
