Japanese Foreign Minister Kawano Taro and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi started the first high-level economic talks between the two countries on Monday, and the trade relations between the United States and China are tense at the moment.
Both China and the US have threatened to impose tariffs on each other, leading to a growing concern over the outbreak of trade wars between the two countries. Japan's trade practices were attacked by President Trump, and it was listed on the US steel and aluminum tariff list. However, Japan has not yet responded to the threat of tariffs.
Wang Yi, the Chinese State Councilor and Minister of foreign affairs, is the first Chinese foreign minister to visit Japan in nine years. On Sunday night, he discussed with Kawano Taro a number of issues, including the North Korean issue.
"Over the past eight years, the economic environment of the two countries and its surroundings has changed dramatically, and our role in the regional economy has been strengthened," Kawano Taro said in the opening session of the Monday dialogue, pointing out that China and Japan need to reshape their bilateral relations.
Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo and Chinese President Xi Jinping promised to reset Sino Japanese relations last year. China and Japan are the two largest economies in Asia, and the relationship between them is sometimes tricky.
"I hope we can discuss closer economic cooperation today, as well as regional and global economic situation," Kawano added.
