Fulilan said, she will fly to Washington on Thursday, and the United States trade representative Wright chize meeting. Lettse is quick to reach a principled agreement before trying to win the July 1st presidential election in Mexico.
According to people familiar with the situation, the three countries are expected to publish the solution by mid April, which is expected to solve the key issue of the proportion of auto parts and parts of origin, while other controversial chapters remain to be dealt with later.
"We are making good progress in NAFTA... Even so, we still have not reached an agreement," said Fulilan.
One of the major sections to be resolved is that the U.S. demand for parts of the car produced by NAFTA member countries will increase from 62.5% to 85% in North America.
A Mexico source said the US negotiators had shown some flexibility on this issue, and the three countries were looking for alternatives.
Only six chapters have reached agreement in the 30 chapters. There are still many differences between dispute resolution and government procurement.
A Canadian official who was familiar with the Canadian negotiating position said on Wednesday that Canadian officials believed that the three countries could not finalize the remaining terms in the next two weeks.
"They may reach a symbolic principle agreement, indicating that they have reached a consensus on five or six key issues," the source said. Because the matter is sensitive, the source asked for anonymity.
The official added that the chief negotiator will meet in Washington next week, and there is no eighth round of negotiations at present. Officials suggested that the eighth round of negotiations will start in April 8th.
