Three government officials say India has asked the United States to grant steel and aluminum tariff exemption, saying that the exports of the two products do not pose a security threat to the United States.
The India trade department has sent a letter to the United States government, requiring India's steel and aluminum exports to be exempt from the 25% and 10% tariffs.
"These tariffs will certainly affect our exports. Obviously, there is no security threat to the United States regarding the number and type of iron and steel products concerned, "India iron and steel minister Chaudhary Birender Singh told Reuters.
The United States only accounts for 2% of India's iron and steel exports, but it is at the moment of escalating trade frictions between the two countries.
