Nippon Iron and Steel League president Goto Takao said Monday that the Japanese steel industry is concerned that the United States will import steel and aluminum import tariffs as a card in a broader trade negotiations.

The United States agreed on Monday to exempt the South Korean steel tax, but set import quotas. In principle, the two countries agreed to revise the bilateral trade agreement that was severely criticized by Trump.

“We are concerned that the United States will use the new tariff as a card for wider trade negotiations,” said Mitsuo Goto, president of Japan Iron & Steel Alliance, at a press conference.

Last week, U.S. President Trump temporarily excluded the EU and six other countries from joining the steel and aluminum tariff plan. This exemption includes most American allies but not Japan.
