Ajit Pai, chairman of the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), said that he agrees with concerns of US congressmen regarding the threat of espionage by Chinese smartphone maker Huawei, and plans to take "preventive measures" to ensure the integrity of the US communications supply chain.

In a letter he wrote to parliamentarians on March 20, he stated that he was also worried that "Huawei and other Chinese technology companies pose a security threat to our communications network." Pai stated that he intends to take action "in the near term" without specifying.

The FCC spokesman declined to comment.

Previous Republican Senators Tom Cotton and Marco Rubio proposed a bill in February that would prevent the U.S. government from purchasing or renting telecommunications equipment from Huawei or ZTE (000063.SZ), saying that they feared that the two companies would take the opportunity to monitor U.S. officials.

Chinese companies have received increasingly rigorous scrutiny in the United States in recent years because the United States is concerned that these companies may be the medium of espionage. Related Chinese companies have always denied this.
