U.S. Secretary of State Tyshler warned on Thursday the Latin American countries not to rely too much on economic and trade ties with China, saying the region does not need new imperialist forces.
Mr Tillerson said in a speech that Russia's presence in the region is "alarming" as well. He is about to visit Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Colombia and Jamaica.
"China is now gaining a firm foothold in Latin America, and is using its economic power to bring this region into its own sphere; the question is what the costs are to be paid by all nations," Tillerson, on his way to Mexico, University of Austin said.
Tillerson said China is now Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Peru's largest trading partner and has said that to ensure that its sovereignty is not infringed upon by "potential predators", it needs a strong system and a responsible government.
"Although trade has brought benefits, many Chinese unfair trade practices have hurt the manufacturing industries in these countries as well, causing unemployment and lowering labor wages," said Tillerson.
"Latin America does not need the neo-imperialist forces that care only for the interests of its own people," he said. "Such a model of state-led development in China recalls the past, and there is no need for such a future here.
