German industrial workers started a 24-hour strike on the second day Thursday. The strike was due to payroll and working hours, with companies affected by auto makers Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) and Ford (F.N).

The German trade union IG Metall called for a full-day strike until Friday, the latest warning to employers. Whether to extend the strike after the vote will be decided. Strikes can seriously affect companies that rely on the supply chain of automotive components and other components.

Both the union and employers said on Thursday they were open to the resumption of the talks on Monday but each asked the other side to further demonstrate its willingness to make concessions.

With Germany's economy growing at its fastest pace in six years and unemployment falling to record lows, IG Metall has the courage to multiply. The union called for a pay rise of 8% for the nation's 3.9 million metal and engineering employees in 27 months.

The union also demanded that workers have the right to reduce the number of working hours per week from 35 to 28 hours to take care of children, elderly or sick relatives and resume normal working hours after two years.
